Hizb ut-Tahrir proscribed as terrorist organisation

Hizb ut-Tahrir has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation.

They are an international pan-Islamist Islamic fundamentalist organisation whose stated aim is the re-establishment of the Islamic caliphate to unite the Muslim community. Home Secretary James Cleverly said the group was "antisemitic" and "actively promotes and encourages terrorism". The ban under UK terrorism laws comes after followers were accused of chanting "jihad" at a pro-Gaza rally.

Defining extremism in a free society

Somewhat ironically, one of the more complex challenges in contemporary counter-extremism practice is defining exactly what is meant by the term ‘extremism’. The very concept is culturally and ideologically relative since it is rooted in a shared understanding of acceptable behaviour and thought. Therefore, arriving at an objective or universal definition is very difficult, especially since the term is frequently instrumentalised for political purposes.

Some say extremism is something you can recognise when you see it but is much harder to define, others argue that it is the secular version of blasphemy. In this piece, I want to explore the complexities of this debate and propose a definition that I think best works for a contemporary Anglosphere context.

Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week

11th - 17th February

Did you know that according to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA), over 18 million children every year live with a family member struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol? That's a lot of young hearts bearing the weight of their loved ones' challenges. But here's the thing—they don't have to face it alone.

These incredible children often navigate their lives feeling a bit lost, and there's a concerning likelihood that they might struggle with alcoholism themselves as they grow older. But fear not! Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week is on a mission to flip the script and break these patterns by shining a light on this societal challenge.

Now, here's where we can all make a difference: Let's spread the word and extend a helping hand. Awareness is the first step, but action is where the magic happens. Reach out to those around you, offer support to families in need, and create safe spaces for these kids to share their feelings. Every small act of kindness contributes to changing these statistics and fostering hope. Together, we can be a part of the solution and make sure no child suffers in silence.

Low Vision Awareness Month

February

Did you know that this month is Low Vision Awareness Month? It's a fantastic opportunity to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with low vision and to foster understanding and support in our communities.

Being more aware of low vision issues starts with empathy and openness. Take a moment to consider the daily triumphs and obstacles someone with low vision encounters. Small gestures like offering assistance when needed or being mindful of their environment can make a huge difference. Educate yourself and others about the various tools and technologies available that enhance accessibility for those with low vision. Simple acts of kindness, like describing surroundings or using clear, verbal cues, can create a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere.

Let's make an effort to be champions of awareness and advocates for inclusivity this Low Vision Awareness Month. By fostering understanding and compassion, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of vision, feels seen and valued. Together, let's build a more supportive and empathetic community!

It is disheartening to witness the persistence of prejudice and hatred based on religious practices. As advocates for inclusivity and respect, let us embark on a collective journey to combat anti-Semitism, creating a space where tolerance thrives, and diverse religious beliefs are celebrated. Together, we can contribute to a world where mutual understanding prevails over ignorance, and our shared humanity triumphs over discrimination.
