• This week’s headlines present us with a neat little microcosm of the short term rental sector, its huge potential and its recurring problems.
On the one had we have Chinese rental platform Xiaozhu raising $300 million, led by Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma, one of China’s foremost tech entrepreneurs. The company is on a tremendous growth curve and Ma’s backing will be a huge help in securing future funding.
But Airbnb, which is further down the line in its evolution, is running in to localised regulatory hurdles on a weekly basis, despite its best efforts to become a socially responsible business through initiatives such as Open Homes - which this week has been helping out victims of Hurricane Michael.
At the same time, the city of Las Vegas is seriously considering a total ban on vacation rentals. The Nevada city is one of the biggest tourist markets in the US but also has a very powerful hotel lobby. This one could run and run, as Airbnb is not going to give up on such a prime market without a fight. Similar battles are erupting all over the US, where legislative power is devolved to a very local level - a nightmare for a company which wants a level playing field to trade from.
