12•11•18 Welcome to the Short Term Rentalz weekly newsletter!

• The phenomenal growth of Airbnb in the 10 years since its foundation has been well documented, as have its constant recent efforts to find new growth areas to keep the momentum going. Perhaps one of the more unlikely of these is the significant recent surge in older users - both as guests and travellers.

In Thailand, over-60s now account for the highest proportion of guests on Airbnb, with the number of seniors who have booked with Airbnb over the last year increasing by 66 per cent. There are also now around 1,500 senior hosts on Airbnb in Thailand, up by 26 per cent on 2017. It is a similar scene in Ireland, where the over 60s are both the fastest-growing hosting age demographic and the fastest-growing guest market as they believe short-term rentals promote “local, diverse, inclusive and sustainable” tourism.

Running parallel with this is the growing multi-generational family travel movement, where the booking guest is a senior accompanying their children or relatives on their travels. As life expectancy in the developed world is on a rapid upward curve and the proportion of seniors in the population is also on a similar trajectory, Airbnb could well have struck ‘old gold’ with this market.

This trend and others are highlighted in STRz reporter Paul Stevens’ 2019 industry predictions. Take a look and see if you agree with him. We’d love to hear yours too - please email me your suggestions.
