24•12•18 Welcome to the Short Term Rentalz weekly newsletter!

• One of the most notable news items this week has been Airbnb's decision to add a Boutique Hotels category to its website's landing page and to include hotels in its space type filter.

The updated Airbnb platform now features Boutique Hotels in the "More ways to stay in 2019" section, next to the Entire Homes and Airbnb Plus, in a seemingly deliberate move to make hotels easier for guests to deliver and book through the site. Meanwhile, visitors can also find hotel rooms listed among the entire place, private room and shared room filters when they search and filter their room results. This appears to be a strategic update to help hotel owners or general managers merchandise their properties up front, thus raising Airbnb's profile once again.

Although Airbnb has yet to disclose any further details about its future strategy regarding hotels, the move suggests the company has long-term ambitions to expand its focus beyond its core short-term rental / home-share business in a trend which looks likely to grow in 2019.

It follows on from our interview with Tim Choate, who predicted the consolidation of booking channels in 2019: "Google is the starting place with the majority of searches for travel going through to Expedia, Booking.com and Airbnb so I imagine that those folks will also be engaged in it. With hotel ads, it actually offered an opportunity for hotels to step up in a more direct way."

This is the last ShortTermRentalz newsletter before the Christmas festivities so let us take the opportunity to wish all of our readers Happy Holidays and a prosperous year ahead in 2019!
