07•01•19 Welcome to the first Short Term Rentalz weekly newsletter of 2019!

• One of the stories to catch the eye this week was the news that Wisconsin-based company Escape was giving away its line of tiny homes for free to partners willing to use them as Airbnb rentals.

The homes, which are for the most part self-sufficient, are part of a new "Free Escape Tiny House programme" initiative, which will allow the partners to set up their own utilities and heat systems, all running on solar power. However, the nature-inspired homes will not be "free" exactly. The current costs of purchasing an Escape home range between $40,000 and $80,000, plus any utilities and the cost of a licence plate as the tiny homes on wheels are legally designated as recreational vehicles. That said, the rental programme offering these tiny vacation homes appears to be flourishing with talks already underway for similar designs in France and Jamaica.

Escape Homes founder Dan Dobrowolski highlighted the company's success: "We've seen the interest in tiny home vacations soar. Launching this programme allows us to introduce the vacation experience to more people across the country."

It follows on from December's announcement that Airbnb would be launching its home design initiative, Backyard, in 2019. Co-founder Joe Gebbia said: "It is an initiative to prototype new ways that homes can be built and shared, guided by an ambition to  realise more humanistic, future-oriented, and waste-conscious design." He added that he saw it as a "social responsibility".

As this is our first newsletter of 2019, we would like to wish all of our readers a Happy New Year and hope you take a close look at the 2019 trends articles listed this week!
