• Last week saw International Hospitality Media hold the annual SAS Recharge event in Berlin, which included a pertinent debate on the future of short-term rentals.

The debate, hosted by IHM CEO Piers Brown, featured the lead motion, "Private accommodation is transforming global accommodation"

Will Smith, head of internationalisation at Plum Guide, and Christoph Kasper, the Homelike CEO and founder, proposed the motion, while Marriott International's Markus Lehnert and Oakwood Asia Pacific's Dean Schreiber opposed the motion. The opposition to the motion won by two votes.

The discussion put the spotlight on topics affecting short-term rentals, such as the proliferation of regulations in cities around the world, maintaining hotel-like standards , the importance of technology and diversification and disruption in the space.

A group discussion, led by Here to Stay TV's Glenn Haussman and Dexter Moren's Paul Wells, was also held to explore how alternative accommodation is changing our urban environment.

As part of the "Socialising the Box" hour, leaders and delegates were encouraged to share their own experiences in hospitality and bring ideas to the table to challenge the business status quo.

Meanwhile, entries for the “best short-term rental platform / operator” category at the annual Serviced Apartment Awards are still open until 31 January. The awards night will celebrate the achievements of 16 award winners and shortlisted guests at a glittering ceremony at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank on 14 March.
