• Before I started working in the hospitality sector I was a reporter and news editor for b2b publications covering several different industries. In some of these roles, sadly, reporting on companies going in to administration was an almost weekly occurrence and it got to the stage that I had the telephone numbers of numerous insolvency practitioners on speed dial.

One of the things that has been remarkable, since we launched Serviced Apartment News in 2013, is how infrequently we have reported on companies in difficulty - in fact I think I can count them on one hand. In the case of Executive Serviced Apartments, while the situation is clearly a testing one, joining up with Flying Butler will hopefully form a new and stronger operations with good regional coverage across London and the south of England. We wish them well.

Despite the relative strength and vibrancy of the UK serviced apartments over recent years, I am concerned that there are choppy waters ahead. The Brexit issue is something that many in Europe just want to be sorted one way or the other, so they know what they are dealing with and can plan accordingly.

Despite traveller numbers being up in Europe, the continuing uncertainty is causing many guests, particularly business travellers, to postpone or curtail trips and I have heard anecdotal evidence that late February and March were very tough for operators across the UK. I hope, for our industry and many others, that we can get a resolution to the Brexit situation sooner rather than later or I may have to start looking up some of those old phone numbers.
