• As well as alerting travellers to the myriad of alternatives to hotels, Airbnb has also highlighted the importance of good design and incorporating a local flavour in to a property.

The best short-term rental properties feature adventurous design, sometimes reflecting the character of the host, but always rooted in their surroundings. And as Envizzo's Ariel Maidansky shared with us recently in New York, serviced apartment operators need to take inspiration from this trend - the days of cookie cutter design are over.

It's fine for an apartment to be recognisably part of a brand portfolio, but it's no longer OK for a brand's property in London to look identical to its units in Paris or Los Angeles. The customer wants more, and especially if they are staying for several weeks or months, they don't want to be in a drab and predictable environment.

So while Airbnb has done the sector a huge favour in terms of awareness, it is also compelling the best operators to raise the bar in terms of design and engagement in their local communities, to the benefit of all parties involved.

• Don't forget today is your last chance to secure Early Bird and First-Timer tickets for SAS Europe 2019 - there are still a few available for this unmissable business and networking opportunity, don't miss out!
