• As the major hotel chains' extended stay brands look to continue their rapid growth, it is something of a surprise that Canada hasn't been a high priority for them sooner, thanks to its location, strong economic foundations and polarised domestic market.
But the cat is certainly out of the bag now, with both Hilton and Marriott boosting their pipeline, and others sure to follow. Marriott recently opened the world's largest Residence Inn in Calgary, with Don Cleary, president of Marriott International in Canada, saying: "Calgary is a key market for extended-stay travel and we are delighted to launch the city's third Residence Inn, widening the accommodation options available to business travellers whilst also putting Calgary's most popular cultural attractions within easy reach of our long-stay leisure guests."
And Hilton is looking to add dual branded and mixed use projects to those recently announced in Ottawa and Montreal, and a further half dozen signings in its pipeline.
Don't be surprised to see other brands focusing on the Great White North.
