03•06•19 Welcome to the latest Short Term Rentalz weekly newsletter!
• It has been an eventful week in the short-term rental industry as several news items made national headlines, such as the ceasing of trading of Brighton Holiday Homes.
According to The Brighton Argus, the firm, managed by Michelle and Neil Stonehill, told customers they would not get their money back despite them having already paid for their holidays. Since then, its Kemptown office has been left vacant according to neighbouring traders.
An email to customers read: “It is with great regret that due to the challenging economic conditions, we have ceased trading with immediate effect. You will not be able to access the property you booked so please do not travel to Brighton unless you have alternative accommodation."
The announcement left customers angry, with one woman telling the newspaper she had paid £4,500 for a holiday for her sister in June but had nothing back since from the firm.
The closure of the lettings agent, which let out properties to tourists on behalf of the owners, means there will be significant ramifications on local businesses who relied on the trade with them, as well as the customers who have been short-changed by the Stonehills.
ShortTermRentalz tried to contact Brighton Holiday Homes but there was no reply.
In other news, Airbnb has taken the measure of eliminating guest fees for some property managers and hotels that sign up for its service and use its software from 4 June (Tuesday).
The rental platform said property managers and professional hosts who create accounts and use its software from that date in Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, can switch to a 14 per cent host-only fee or a shared host and guest fee. This means that Airbnb is looking to take business away from companies like Booking.com and Expedia with its new fee structure as a way of driving direct bookings from guests and clients alike.
It comes as Robin Clifford, Airbnb territory manager for Northern Europe and serviced apartment lead for EMEA, has been announced to participate in a snapchat conversation on Day Two of this year's Serviced Apartment Summit Europe in London.
The session will see Clifford discuss issues in the short-term rental and serviced apartment sectors, as well as his company's role in both spaces.
The event, organised by International Hospitality Media, is the only leadership conference for the serviced apartment, extended stay hotels / aparthotel, and short-term accommodation sectors. The summit will take place from 1-2 July at Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, London, and tickets remain on sale at this link.
