• As ever, the Serviced Apartment Summit Europe provided us with some memorable moments, telling insights, great connections and business opportunities - if you missed it, you missed out.
From a personal point of view, the event was a 'hot-bed' for innovation with the impact of technology featuring in many conversations on stage and amongst the owners, operators, investors, agents and service providers in attendance. Jim Dolan of KPMG's presentation on what is actually possible in the hospitality sector with current technology was incredible - as Dolan said "this is not science fiction" but some of it sure looked like it.
A panel of operators agreed that finding the right balance of technology and great staff was a big challenge, as was finding and retaining those staff. Peter Heule of Yays revealed his company recently held a recruitment day which was more like a social gathering than a traditional interview, and he said it soon became clear which of the aspiring recruits had the right personality traits to fit in with the company ethos. Skills can be taught, but having the right inherent attitude to work and life is more important, said Heule.
