• The demise of Tink Labs and its Handy smartphone business will have repercussions for serviced apartments and throughout hospitality. I know the no-cost 'starter promo' offer was eagerly taken up by 100's of owners and operators. In the UK alone Supercity, the Cheval Collection, the Edinburgh Collection and Mansley were Handy clients.
Commentators are putting the Hong Kong-based company's failure down to expanding too quickly, but I have to admit I had my doubts about its business model, which offered free air time to guests who would receive advertising messages when using the device. Don't get me wrong, I wanted the business to succeed, but it now raises questions about the long-term future of in-room devices when virtually every traveller has their own capable of streaming content and operating apps provided by apartments and hotels.
• Don't forget to book your tickets for Serviced Apartment Summit Middle East and Africa, which takes place in Dubai on September 16. The Summit is taking place at a new venue, EMAAR's ROVE Dubai Marina, and at letswork - one of the locations of the UAE's largest community of co-working spaces.
Now in its fourth year, the Summit is the region's only b2b conference and exhibition on serviced apartments, extended stay hotels, branded residences, holiday homes and short-term rentals. Sponsors for 2019 include Airbnb, EMAAR - ROVE Hotels and letswork, Oakwood, RMS, HoCoSo, Maison Privee and Nomad Aparthotels.
