•   I wrote recently about the lack of sustainability measures built in to serviced apartment buildings and operations, particularly when compared with other areas of hospitality and real estate.

So it was great to hear from Stuart Duncan about the launch of his Apartrooms scheme in Aberdeen - a property which has taken many of the latest eco features and techniques from the residential construction world, and incorporated them in a brand new serviced apartment property for business and leisure travellers.

The 10-unit building was built off-site to Passivhaus standards using a prefabricated modular system, and features a super-insulated structure, floor-to-ceiling triple glazing for solar gain, mechanical ventilation heat recovery for continuous fresh filtered air and solar PV panels on the roof, and two electric car charging points in the car park.

Duncan has ambitious growth plans for the brand, and has planning permission for an additional 34 units on the Aberdeen site. The building techniques he is employing make a lot of sense for the aparthotel sector, and we should be seeing many more projects like this in the future.
