04•11•19 Welcome to the latest Short Term Rentalz weekly newsletter!
• If you were watching the news over the weekend, you will have seen the awful news of a fatal shooting at an Airbnb rental in the San Francisco suburb of Orinda, which has led to the platform announcing a ban on so-called 'party houses'.
Five people were killed during a Halloween party at the California property and two guns were recovered from the crime scene, although full details are yet to emerge about any motives for the incident. Following that, Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky tweeted that the company would move forward with enhancing manual screening of 'high risk' reservations and forming a rapid response team to address future complaints of unauthorised parties and prevent further such tragedies.
• In other news, Vacasa has become the latest unicorn in the rental management space after a $319m strategic investment round led by Silver Lake took the company's valuation beyond $1 billion. After acquiring Wyndham Vacation Rentals for $162m, it plans to use the funding to enhance its tech platform, accelerate expansion into global markets and grow offerings such as Vacasa Real Estate.
• This week, the ShortTermRentalz team was present for the inaugural HOST event at London's Business Design Centre, where we drove nominations for our first-ever Shortyz Awards on 11 March 2020. For more information on event details and the nomination and judging process, award categories and the judging panel, visit our newly-launched event website here, or start nominating your Shortyz Stars at shortyz@internationalhospitality.media - it's as easy as 1-2-3!
• With Christmas and the season of good will around the corner, IHM's chosen charity is Alzheimer's Research UK. For my contribution, I am offering one short-term rental company the opportunity to 'employ me' for one working day only before the holiday season. This could be cleaning rooms or shadowing a member of the team, whatever works all in the name of charity.
I promise to work without pay and would kindly request a donation to the charity for no more than the equivalent of one day's work within the company. I will pay my own expenses and can write about the experience on ShortTermRentalz if you wish! If you are interested in this unique opportunity, please get in touch by emailing me at paul@internationalhospitality.media.
• On Friday, I will also be attending the first-ever Short Stay Summit in Barcelona - get in touch if you'd like to organise an interview on the day!
