• Two companies that promote responsible and environmentally-friendly tourism are making waves in the short-term rental industry by building a social home exchange platform and a reservations system, from which funds will be diverted to support local community projects.
In the first case, Italian ethical holiday rental website Fairbnb.coop has launched a reservations system for travellers to stay in apartments in five pilot cities supporting community projects [Valencia, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Bologna and Venice]. Its founder Sito Veracruz has pledged to donate 50 per cent of the commission it earns to social activities chosen by local residents, including community gardening initiatives and an urban agriculture project for migrant women.
Meanwhile, The Holiday Exchange Cooperative, which recently launched in Barcelona, is seeking to build the world’s first social economy home exchange platform by making it easier for people to 'exchange' homes. The co-op says it will use 50 per cent of surpluses to fund social and solidarity economy projects, while 25 per cent of it will go back to members through lower membership fees.
The rise of the "responsible, authentic, fair and conscious tourism" phenomenon is something which we expect to see continue next year, and it will also be appearing in our upcoming, highly-anticipated 2020 predictions piece - do get in touch with me if you want to contribute your insights!
• In other news, our inaugural Shortyz Awards on 11 March 2020 have generated a huge response so far in terms of nominations from across the industry. • This week is also your final chance to help out with IHM's pre-Christmas charity initiative, for which I am offering one short-term rental company the opportunity to 'employ me' for one working day only before the holiday season, with proceeds going to Alzheimer's Research UK. The work can entail cleaning rooms or shadowing a member of the team, whatever works all in the name of charity.
I promise to work without pay and would kindly request a donation to the charity for no more than the equivalent of one day's work within the company. I will pay my own expenses and can write about the experience on ShortTermRentalz if you wish! If you are interested in this unique opportunity, please get in touch by emailing me at paul@internationalhospitality.media.
