30•03•20 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz weekly newsletter!

• As the likes of Sonder and Zeus Living announce significant layoffs and furloughs to their teams, it is a growing indication of how the travel and hospitality industries are being disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, however we have already heard of numerous cases of companies showing their good will in a time of adversity.

This is particularly true in the case of the UK Short-Term Accommodation Association [UK STAA], which has adopted an initiative to offer free accommodation to London's NHS key workers, called the NHS Homes scheme. NHS Homes will also provide additional services to NHS staff to enable them to stay near the hospitals they work in during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The NHS Homes scheme, found here, launched on Friday with six partners: UnderTheDoormat, Laundryheap, onefinestay, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, Altido and LoveHomeSwap:

  • UnderTheDoormat, onefinestay, Altido and LoveHomeSwap will be providing free accommodation in partnership with their property owners
  • Laundryheap will be delivering clean linen and towels for the medical staff
  • Homes & Villas by Marriott International will be providing amenities for guests

Among the other uplifting examples of good will were Airbnb expanding its medical housing programme worldwide [partnering with hotel group Accor in France] and AI room rental platform Badi setting aside 400 rooms in Barcelona for health professionals joining the fight against Covid-19.

In these uncertain times, IHM CEO Piers Brown this week issued a message about our plans and how we intend to support the wider industry through sharing thought leadership, news and commentary, and continuing to offer digital opportunities. The key line is that we will be doing all we can to support our network over the coming months, with the health and well-being of our staff, clients, and contacts being our utmost priority.

At ShortTermRentalz, you can read any of our timely feature pieces, with Cervus Leadership Consulting's Chris Mumford's piece on "leading through crisis and taking inspiration from Churchill" and Operto's Michael Driedger warning lodging providers to pay attention to relative humidity.

You can also look forward to much more pertinent, thought-provoking content over the next few weeks and months, including plans to branch out into more media, as we keep our community informed with everything as it happens in the global short-term rental industry.
