06•04•20 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz weekly newsletter!

• The EU Travel Tech's call for the European Commission to offer equivalent bailout support to its OTA members in line with that being offered to airlines and hotels will have certainly raised some eyebrows among our readers.

EU Travel Tech secretary general Emmanuel Mounier said: “Governments have rightly recognised that travel and tourism is being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our members support efforts to back airlines, hotels and other suppliers. However, it is of utmost importance that the European Commission and member states include exceptional measures to assist the whole industry. This means policies that support the entire travel ecosystem, including travel agents, technology solutions providers e.g. global distribution systems, travel platforms for accommodation, metasearch and travel management companies.”

Booking Holdings and Expedia, much like Airbnb, are not immune to the consequences of Covid-19 on the travel sector, despite the size of the companies as their income dries up for an extended period. The former's share price declined by 37 per cent from the early peak of the outbreak, the latter's stock price dropped by 57 per cent from six months ago, and Airbnb called for federal aid to seek tax breaks for its U.S. hosts, after posting $322m net losses over nine months up to September.

While it is almost impossible to predict what the landscape for short-term rental and travel companies will look like post-pandemic, it will be interesting to see if the current uncertainty paves the way for the likes of Google and Amazon to make a big play for the marketplace.
