This week's webinar asks: "How will hospitality and real estate asset classes which are centred around communal spaces and activities - such as coliving, coworking, hotels, hostels, student housing and aparthotels - address changing attitudes to social distancing when designing and operating new projects?". It will feature Paul Wells, partner at Dexter Moren Associates; Nicolai Padoan, director of development Europe at Kerten Hospitality; and Digby Summerhill, managing director of Minotti London.

• As the global travel industry continues to come to terms with the Covid-19 pandemic, France's government made a concerted effort this week to rebuild tourism in the country by announcing proposals to build an OTA that it hopes would be able to compete with the likes of Airbnb and Booking.com.
The initiative is part of a larger governmental stimulus package, Plan Relance Tourisme, announced by Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, which will include approximately €18 billion of investment to revive tourist interest in one of the world's most desired destinations as hotels and tourist businesses are forced to shut their doors.
Its overall aim is to prise customers away from traditional booking platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb, which some believe hold a monopoly over direct listing sites in the short-term rental marketplace. France's relationship with the latter in particular has been complicated since authorities in cities including Paris and Bordeaux requested rental data from Airbnb to detect possible tax avoidance.
Despite admitting that tourism is facing its "worst test in modern history", Philippe added the French people would be able to go ahead with their domestic holiday plans in July and August. However, it begs the question as to whether the government should instead pledge support for the OTAs and invest in their platforms, as it might be a cheaper alternative and increase marketing opportunities for the country.
Time will tell but as increasing numbers become disillusioned with traditional platforms over their refund policies and negative media coverage, travellers may walk away in favour of booking on sites with which they have "tighter links", as Eric Lombard, the head of the Caisse des Depots & Consignation, said last week.
