The Stay Company adds measures to help local businesses get back to work FEATURES VIDEOS/PODCASTS EDITOR'S COMMENT
• The scale of the Coronavirus impact on the hospitality sector has become apparent in recent
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 7.7 million hospitality and leisure jobs were lost in April, with 70 per cent of direct hotel employees laid off or furloughed.
In the UK, HMRC announced this week that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) have been used to support almost 1.5 million hospitality workers. The schemes have been extended until October, and between them have paid out £2.748 billion so far.
Governments are in a tricky situation, trying to balance containing the spread of infection with kick starting the economy, but if hospitality businesses aren't allowed to resume trading soon, many of them are not going to even be in a position to do so. We have already seen numerous hotels go in to administration, and serviced apartment operators cease trading. The business environment is going to be extremely tough for quite some time, and if everybody reopens at the same time, occupancy levels are not going to see a significant rise. We're about to enter the next phase, and in its own way, it is likely to be as challenging as the current one.
