• The news that the UK hospitality sector has been awaiting with bated breath is now official. Ahead of a more detailed statement this evening, prime minister Boris Johnson has announced the reopening of "self-contained accommodation" including hotels, pubs, B&Bs, campsites and restaurants on July 4, declaring that "our long national hibernation is beginning to come to an end".
While it is great news for thousands of businesses who have been without income streams for more than three months, the announcement is not going to be the panacea for all ills. While the 14-day quarantine rule for overseas visitors remains in place, hotels and serviced apartments in London, for example, with its massive reliance on foreign guests, are still going to be struggling.
And the business travel market, which is so crucial to many serviced apartment operators, will be slow to rebound. Christian Mole, EY UK&I Head of Hospitality & Leisure, said today: "After the peak July/August summer season – when staycation-driven bookings will be high – the financial stability
