EDITOR'S COMMENT

27/06/2020

• It feels like we are starting to go up through the gears in a return to business for the travel and hospitality sectors. Last week's announcement that UK hotels could reopen from July 4 was of little comfort to properties, such as those in London, which are heavily reliant on overseas visitors.

So today's advance notice from the government that travellers from a selection of European countries will no longer have to be quarantined for 14 days is a huge boost. A 'traffic light' system will monitor the perceived risk from various countries and their status can be adjusted accordingly. On current thinking, Portugal and Sweden are still in the red zone but the majority of the continent has the green light.

The situation is far from perfect - there is still no travel corridor with the US, for example, which provides a significant proportion of business for the aforementioned London hotels. But it is a big step down the road to our industry reopening, and a very welcome one at that.

• Don't forget to register for the next in our Urban Living webinar series, which takes place on July 1st, at 14:00 BST when we will be discussing hotel funding and investment.
