• The Black Lives Matter protests in the United States, sparked by the killing of a black American, George Floyd, have sent reverberations around the world and shone a spotlight on police brutality towards African-American people and their communities.
In Part One of a podcast special for ShortTermRentalz here, we interview four industry leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds who address the matter of diversity and equality within the short-term rental and wider hospitality space.
We addressed what they were each doing to encourage inclusion within their businesses, how employees' different backgrounds within teams can drive innovation in the sector, and how we can ensure 2020 is the catalyst for change in achieving better ethnic minority representation within our boardrooms.
The speakers were: - Philip Kennard, CEO of Futurestay - Nina Taylor, founder and CEO of The Suite Faith - Mateo Bradford, country manager USA at Doinn - Aneesa Arshad, co-founder and VP of enterprise sales at Blueground
The challenges facing the travel sector were laid bare in an annual report by Women in Hospitality, Travel and Leisure, published earlier this year.
It revealed that while female and black and ethnic minority representation in the most senior roles of travel companies increased in 2019, with female representation rising from 5.3 to 28.9 per cent, 84 per cent of those surveyed were not on track to reach 33 per cent female representation and 15 per cent had all-male boards. There were also no BAME CEOs, chairs or senior independent directors in FTSE 350 HTL firms.
In an industry as people-centric as the short-term rental space, one that is driven by a unique sense of community, it is clear that we all have a collective responsibility to push for greater diversity and equality, as entrepreneurs bring different ideas to the table using their own experiences. From this conversation, we hoped to trigger a broader conversation about embracing these matters at all levels in hospitality.
