• Despite the gradual reopening of hospitality sectors around the world, the end of the coronavirus seems some way off, and in the US, leading expert on infectious diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci, has warned the country is still "knee-deep in the first wave".
In the latest feature of our short-term rental market recovery series here, we analyse the situation in the north-eastern US states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, to track how they are responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, how businesses in the rental space are being impacted, and how prepared each state is to react to a second wave.
Not one of the 50 US states has emerged unscathed from this pandemic, with New York being particularly hard hit in the early stages of the crisis. The state has the highest number of deaths in the country, and has reported more cases than any single country outside of the United States.
News of a new outbreak in Miami-Dade County following the 4 July weekend should serve as a warning about the risks of failing to abide by social distancing measures and facial covering rules if we are to withstand the coronavirus and keep our hospitality industries open for a sustained amount of time.
Data from AirDNA, AllTheRooms and Transparent shows that Airbnb bookings are down this year on 2019 levels, and it suggests travellers are vacating major urban destinations in favour of locations within driving distance of major urban hubs, where they can self-isolate in their own private space, such as in beach destinations, mountain towns and lakeside getaways.
However, this pandemic is also driving a trend in domestic travel as guests seek to stay in another neighbourhood in their city after months in lockdown, according to Co Host Expert Company's Robertin Nunez. Operators will now need to hone in more on these demographics as local travellers not only stay longer but are less likely to leave negative reviews as there is no culture shock when they arrive.
