13•07•20 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz newsletter!

• Just a few months ago, GuestReady, NOCNOC, HostnFly and Welkeys were all competing with each other: now, all four short-term rental property management startups operating in France have joined forces to launch Travel in France, a new platform for booking flats and houses in the country.

The unique collaboration will see the four startups share out their offerings, providing more than 3500 lodgings in 40 French cities, at a time when searches for domestic travel and staycations are on the rise. This was illustrated in an OpinionWay survey, which revealed that 71 per cent of French people were looking to holiday in their own country this summer.

Such a link up will provide a number of benefits for travellers in France, including ensuring a quality service is being provided across the board, all accommodations are verified by a concierge, and housekeeping and disinfection will be carried out by trained professionals, as Travel in France aims to reinvigorate the French travel and tourism sector, which has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Back in May, the French government announced its intention to launch its own national online platform for holiday goers to revive the sector. It now begs the question whether we will see similar collaborations between companies in other countries, who may decide to temporarily put aside their differences to establish themselves as the principal alternative to hotels and other online booking platforms and OTAs.

The topic of accommodation verification was addressed in Quality in Tourism director Deborah Heather's feature this week. As businesses start to reopen and guests start to return, it is her hope that the industry will move away from self-certification practices towards mandatory, fit-for-purpose accountability, in order to level the playing field between operators and leave a sector that is free to innovate and adapt.
