• As news emerged over the weekend that the UK government was reimposing quarantine restrictions on holidaymakers returning from Spain, it should come as no surprise that regions are seeing spikes in the number of new cases but the abruptness of the decision once again threatens to derail a global travel industry that has already been hit significantly by this crisis.
As of midnight yesterday, tourists returning to British shores were required to self-isolate for two weeks, a move prompted by a surge in cases in mainland Spanish regions including Catalonia, Navarra and Aragon.
Spain is unlikely to be the last country to face such changes in travel advice, with infection rates in the likes of Germany, France and Belgium already showing signs of moving in the wrong direction as restrictions began to be lifted several weeks ago.
With the news that travellers not already in Spain will likely have their travel insurance policies invalidated, it throws up plenty of questions about how this will affect people's travel choices, how accommodation providers will be able to recoup essential revenue if bookings are cancelled at the last minute and how UK businesses will manage if employees are forced to quarantine for a fortnight away from work. In an ever-changing global situation, this latest blow underlines the threat the travel industry is facing when infections resurface and it will only heighten interest in holidaying domestically this summer.
That trend was backed up by Europ Assistance's Future of Travel survey, which predicts that while the majority of tourists will travel locally this summer, they will be eager to travel internationally again in 2021. The risk of destinations closing their borders or imposing restrictions should drive domestic travel this year but operators should be prepared for a surge in accommodation demand when the holiday season returns.
