• After hosting Wednesday's Urban Living webinar on Flex Rentals: Investing in innovation, it appears the success of Airbnb's IPO will be a "watershed moment" for the home-sharing industry.
In my first video opinion piece, I evaluate the potential success of Airbnb's IPO and why investors should be encouraged by the company's ability to operate on a profit, even though certain challenges remain.
Though details are scarce on what the IPO will entail, Airbnb turned down the opportunity to merge with billionaire investor Bill Ackman's special purpose acquisition company [SPAC], Pershing Square Tontine Holdings Ltd, before it confidentially filed to go public last month. CEO Brian Chesky even admitted having been approached about a merger with a SPAC in July, but remained coy over its identity.
That would suggest Airbnb executives are currently confident in holding out for the highest possible valuation around the $40 billion mark, if and when the company does come to the market. While not completely ruling out a merger in future, the firm may not be willing to give up control to a SPAC which could affect its valuation, and it will be mindful to go public before the end of the year, when the restricted stock options of some of its early employees are set to expire.
