Ascott sees increased focus on extended stay in MEA region FEATURES VIDEOS/PODCASTS EDITOR'S COMMENT
• It’s certainly a sign of the times when one of the biggest new hotel projects in Dubai features significantly more serviced apartment units than standard hotel rooms.
The SLS Dubai Hotel & Residences, which will open in Q4 2020, will feature 321 serviced apartments, 254 hotel rooms and 371 residential units.
The project, which will be one of the tallest in the emirate at 75 storeys, is a clear indicator that mixed-use developments are the way forward - it also contains extensive communal facilities including restaurants, a spa and rooftop infinity pools.
It’s also an example of hospitality operators - in this case SLS parent company sbe, crossing over in to the residential space. When the project was launched, sbe’s residential platform included 1,300 branded units worth $2 billion already sold, with an additional $1.8 billion in the pipeline.
Jeff Tisdall, SVP development residential and extended stay at Accor, which owns a 50 per cent stake in sbe, is one of the guests on our Urban Living webinar next week, along with yoo's John Hitchcox; Felicity Jones, partner at Watson Farley Williams and Tea Ros, managing director at Strategic Hotel Consulting.
