• London is one of, if not the hardest hit destinations by the pandemic in the UK - the latest data from STR reveals the capital saw occupancy levels at 37 per cent for the week ending 30 August. In the creative hub of Shoreditch, which saw an unprecedented flurry of openings over the last five years, the impact of the struggling economy is reflected in the latest communication from NYC hotelier Michael Achenbaum, founder of The Curtain. Due to the "economic impact" of Covid, Achenbaum will cease operating the hotel and private members club.
Following the British government's decision to ban by law social gatherings of up to six people, from Monday next week, it's with a heavy heart that I expect hospitality businesses to struggle more, just as things were starting to look up. Exactly how these new rules apply will be made clear when Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces further details on the legislation later today.
Industry action and lobby groups will seriously have to step up for hospitality to stand a fighting chance of survival. Though anxiety surrounding the rising number in coronavirus cases is understandable, the government simply must now act to a greater degree than before in order to sustain the sector's lifeline.
