• Apartment-hotel hospitality brand Domio delivered the latest bombshell news for the industry on Friday when co-founders Jay Roberts [CEO] and Adrian Lam [CSO] resigned from their roles with immediate effect following an investigation by partner company Airbnb over alleged malpractice and violation of its standards.
At the same time, Airbnb has rescinded a ban on Domio accounts listing on its platform and given the company a "final warning" to comply with its trust and safety standards, but it also suggests Airbnb is prioritising professionally-managed listings alongside the rest of its inventory in the build up to its IPO. The news is, however, another publicity body blow for the platform, exacerbated by the fact that a number of hosts this week reported a breach of their privacy, with messages, codes and addresses seemingly revealed.
While Airbnb's ties with Domio may do little to dispel critics who say the platform is moving too far away from its local connections roots, the decisiveness of its actions to bar misleading accounts [some allegedly with fake names and stock photographs] suggests Airbnb is keen to raise the bar of hosting professionalisation and heighten guest expectations in the process.
• This week also sees the launch of The Book Direct Show, a new event for the short-term rental industry that aims to help property managers and hoteliers generate more direct bookings, for which ShortTermRentalz is a media partner. Taking place on Tuesday 29 - Wednesday 30 September, tickets can be bought here and check out our recent podcast with directors Damian Sheridan and Deborah Labi here.
