EDITOR'S COMMENT

21/10/2020

• Soft brands are not a new phenomenon, with groups such as Marriott's Autograph Collection and Accor's MGallery tallying around 199 and 108 member-properties respectively. Radisson Hotel Group is now the latest player in the field, having launched its conversion brand Radisson Individuals.

Hotels in the UK and Asia have already joined the group, with others expected in Italy, Germany and Russia. Federico J. González, CEO of Radisson Hotel Group, commented: “The launch of Radisson Individuals marks another milestone in our ambitious five-year transformation plan to be recognised as one of the top three hotel brands in the world... We created Radisson Individuals in response to the evolving demands of the modern market for both hotel owners and guests."

The timing of the launch suggests Radisson is anticipating a strategic change in direction for some independent hotels. The transition to a branded property was touched on in a webinar I hosted recently on design reimagined, hotel space repurposed. Access to a wider distribution channel and the safety-net that's associated with big brands could be a tempting reason to pivot, along with the flexibility offered by a conversion brand to keep the hotel's name above the door.

Radisson's announcement certainly ups the ante for competition with other chains.
