• I'm surprised that it took almost a week for any clarification around meetings and events following the Prime Minister's announcement of a second national lockdown in England. The Meetings Industry Association (mia) received confirmation that business meetings of up to 30 people can continue during the month long closure the evening before lockdown restrictions came into force. By this point, many hotels had already made the decision to shut.
Tuning into an STR webinar on Friday morning, which gave an overview of European hotel performance, it was shown that hotels in Scotland which continued to operate during the first lockdown were trading at around 30 per cent occupancy when restrictions were lifted in early July. These hotels ultimately outperformed their closed counterparts and it took a further two months until levels evened out.
Whether you have decided to temporarily close or are persevering ahead throughout November, I'm here to support in whatever way I can. When the time is right, I'd be delighted to spend one full day on premises at a hotel that would like to host me, to help the team and learn about the day-to-day operations. This could range from shadowing the general manager, working with HR, or assisting the housekeepers. I'd love to get involved so please do get in touch at eloise@internationalhospitality.media
