• As we get ready for political change in the US, there are some interesting developments afoot in the extended stay sector, which has been the shining star of the country's hospitality world during the pandemic.
Developer Sunview Companies has broken ground on the first property for IHG's new Atwell Suites brand - a “a design-led, dynamic, all-suites hotel brand optimised for longer stays of up to six nights”. It's an interesting concept and is aimed at the space between traditional extended stay brands, such as IHG's Staybridge Suites, and select service hotels.
IHG is pretty bullish about the brand's prospects - there are already 20 in the pipeline - and it says the brand was devised to meet a demand from owners in the upper-midscale all-suite space.
Intriguingly, Radisson is dipping its toe in the US extended stay waters, with a planning application submitted for a Park Inn Residences property in Florida. Radisson is pushing hard to build its extended stay pipeline in Europe and the Middle East - this property has largely gone under the radar but could be indicative of a new focus for Radisson's growth. IHG and Radisson have followed Red Lion Hotels in launching a new extended stay brand in the US, offering further evidence of the attractiveness of this particular market to both domestic and overseas operators. There are likely to be several more players entering the space in 2021.
