• IHG to debut new extended stay brand in Miami FEATURES VIDEOS/PODCASTS EDITOR'S COMMENT
• When we first launched Serviced Apartment News in 2013, one of the biggest challenges the sector faced was attracting the attention - and then the understanding - of the investment community.
Traditional hospitality investors and HNWIs were wary, preferring to stick to what they regarded as tried and tested hotel models, while institutional investors liked the concept but waited to see performance data and successful operators with a track record of delivering consistent profits.
So it was with some satisfaction - and a wry smile, if I'm totally honest - that I took in the headline findings from this year's Deloitte European Hotel Industry Survey. The survey represents the views of a sample of senior hospitality figures, including owners, operators, lenders, developers and investors. Nearly half (45 per cent) of those polled said serviced apartments are the most attractive hospitality asset class, compared with 20 per cent in 2019. Just 25 per cent opted for hotels as first choice, down from 31 per cent last year.
Its findings were backed up by an HVS survey published the same week which said more than 70 per cent of investors polled are actively seeking serviced apartment deals for new developments in key markets.
This incredible turnaround can be partly attributed to the effects of the pandemic - we have seen serviced apartments and extended stay outperform the wider market, in many cases by a wide margin - but only partly. The rest is down to a combination of excellent product, great brands and the numerous talented individuals who are driving the sector forward. It has made fantastic progress in those seven years, and it has been a privilege for us here at SAN to bring you all the sector news in that time.
• One person at the start of his engagement with the investment community is our newest contributor "JJ", SAN's very own 'secret hotelier'. JJ is in the early stages of launching a new aparthotel brand, and he will be sharing the ups and downs of the process in a monthly column exclusive to Serviced Apartment News - The Start-up Diaries. It's going to be a fascinating insight and I'm really looking forward to following his progress. Click here to read the first instalment.
