• One of the many variables on which the recovery of travel will depend in 2021 is the success of any potential Covid-19 vaccines. Therefore, the announcements coming out of Pfizer, Moderna and the University of Oxford in the last week that their own trial vaccines may be at least "90 per cent" effective in preventing the development of Covid symptoms will provide some much-needed, if cautious, reassurance to short-term rental businesses.
According to data compiled property management software platform Guesty, the vaccine effectiveness announcements alone are already triggering an uplift in bookings, as Covid-weary travellers dream of post-lockdown travel to far-flung destinations, highlighting the pent-up demand that is set to be converted into bookings over the next 12 months.
With the holiday season coming up for many of our readers, the news that reservation volume is down over Christmas and New Year's Eve on last year is of no great surprise, however Guesty's data also indicates that booking volume is up by 12 per cent on last year for Thanksgiving in the United States.
It suggests that when effective vaccines against the coronavirus are approved, we can expect people to resume their holiday plans, albeit paying more and staying for longer periods of time. That said, the travel landscape has fundamentally changed since lockdowns were enforced back in March and travellers will want more convincing than ever about their safety, security and flexibility of bookings, so there may be reticence to return to long-distance trips until border restrictions are eased and more people are vaccinated.
