• The UK Government will today reveal which parts of England will be placed under which restrictions in Boris Johnson's "Covid winter plan" three-tier system when the country emerges from a second national lockdown on 2 December: a decision which will have major ramifications for hospitality businesses right across England.
From next Wednesday, all hospitality venues in the highest Tier Three [where the virus is most prevalent] including hotels, pubs and restaurants, will have to shut [except for offering takeaway services], but they will be able to open in Tiers Two and One abiding by strict guidelines.
Figures such as UKHospitality chief Kate Nicholls and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham are already warning many hospitality businesses in the highest tier authorities will "struggle to be viable without additional support" from the Chancellor's Spending Review and miss out on their busiest trading period of the year. After suspending operations twice during this pandemic and updating their safety procedures, businesses will be praying for respite as the government announces it will allow three households to mix over Christmas and news of vaccine effectiveness provides some light at the end of the tunnel.
• Airbnb is also facing scrutiny in the UK following investigations into its money-laundering and counter-terrorist financing controls by The Financial Conduct Authority [FCA], as revealed in the company's S-1 filing before the scheduled IPO next month.
Airbnb is already reeling from chief trust officer Sean Joyce's exit after only six months last year due to a dispute over data-sharing practices in China. The company will be desperate to show it can stand up to public scrutiny and provide safeguarding controls to prevent high-profile issues such as exploitation and fake bookings, in order to achieve the highest possible valuation post-IPO [around $30bn].
