• Having predicted that mergers and acquisitions would dominate early 2021, it is intriguing to see Wyndham Destinations dipping its toes in the media space by buying travel publication Travel + Leisure from Meredith Corporation and rebranding itself as Travel + Leisure Co.
The timeshare and vacation ownership company will be hoping that the $100m acquisition will provide more scope for brand partnerships, as well as allow it to reach new audiences by repurposing its offering for younger, urban demographics. While this transaction is making Wyndham stronger, the deal should enhance credibility in an industry that faces key challenges to overturn its high-pressure sales and cowboy tactics image that has long tarnished it, and that could trigger further high-profile M+A over the coming months.
The level of confidence in the recovery of the industry will also play on the minds of leading travel players, particularly as Covid-19 vaccines start to be rolled out.
