• 2020 has already been a record year for IPOs on US exchanges and it looks set to culminate with Airbnb making its public market debut as soon as next week, raising up to $2.5 billion in the process.
Having just kicked off its investor roadshow this week, Airbnb is becoming increasingly confident of success in its IPO. The company is aiming to float as many as 55 million shares, which would help it to achieve a potential valuation of around the $30 billion mark alongside other tech unicorns going public this year.
The IPO has the potential to be a watershed moment for the entire home-sharing industry. The firm is propped up by a loyal customer base and a unique brand presence but its ability to raise a profit is what will instil confidence in potential investors as the short-term rental segment moves more towards the mainstream.
Despite the encouraging news emerging from Airbnb, it is likely that the IPO will intensify the scrutiny of the platform and the regulation of short-term rentals. The company is facing increasing challenges to curb its operations in cities such as Amsterdam and Lisbon, as well as dealing with the issue of party houses, which will force Airbnb to confront some uncomfortable truths about activities taking place at its listed properties.
