• If there was any doubt about the desire for hotels with character and local flavour, a look at how lifestyle and soft-branded properties are claiming an increasing slice of the major hotel groups' pipelines should provide ample evidence.
To see that lifestyle properties under the Andaz, Alila, Centric and Unbound Collection banners make up half of Hyatt's European pipeline - around 30 of 63 new properties set to open by 2023, is quite incredible when you consider the short space of time these brands have been in the company's portfolio. Hyatt says this growth is fuelled by "a growing desire from travellers, World of Hyatt members, and owners for hotels that offer unique, differentiated experiences that foster genuine connections with people and cultures".
It's a far cry from the approach of the big hotel groups in years gone by when their policy was to have identikit properties everywhere in the world, so you knew you were in a particular company's hotel by looking at the decor, but not a clue which city you might be in.
For the the sector in general, and especially for the traveller, the advances made are good news, but now more than ever there is a place alongside the lifestyle hotels for independently owned and operated boutique hotels who offer an experience so particular and unique that it couldn't be replicated elsewhere. The hotel groups are reacting to the traveller's desire for authenticity, something which the boutique sector already has in abundance.
• During the week commencing 1 March 2021, we're hosting Urban Living Festival Lite - a series of small events held across some of the best hotels and venues that are open in London.
