• Airbnb's IPO has definitely got people talking far and wide - certainly well beyond the vacation rental industry - and rightly so. Its share price on the first day of trading far exceeded expectations, representing a real boost to the medium- and long-term prospects for travel and hospitality.
But the IPO, along with that of other tech firms such DoorDash, has raised fears of a bubble, with a Wall Street analyst describing Airbnb's share price as "more than stretched". After a fall at the end of last week it rebounded yesterday to $140, so if the initial excitement was just froth, it is taking a while to evaporate!
The day after the IPO, STRz's sister brand Urban Living Festival hosted a webinar discussing the IPO. The session featured Andrew McConnell of Rented, Sascha Haussman of HOWZAT ennea Group and Katherine Doggrell, editor-in-chief at Questex. • 2020 has been an unforgettable year, probably the hardest one anyone working in travel and hospitality has been through, but we must be encouraged by the resilience of the people in our industry and the huge pent up demand for travel, which will come flooding back as soon as governments allow it.
Here at International Hospitality Media, we have had to pivot and learn to remain relevant to our audiences. We've made a short video which gives some insight in to how the pandemic has affected us, both personally and professionally - click here to watch, I hope you enjoy it.
This is the last STRz newsletter of 2020. On behalf of editor Paul Stevens and the rest of the team, I'd like to wish all our readers a peaceful and relaxing festive season, and thank you all for engaging with us during what has been an unprecedented time for everyone. We'll be back in the new year - let's hope for great things in 2021!
