• Airbnb's renewed stance to restrict users that fail to abide by the company's policies continued on Wednesday with the announcement that it will block and cancel reservations to the Washington DC Metro area during next week's inauguration of Joe Biden as president, as well as banning any users suspected of belonging to hate groups.

The move was to be expected after reports emerged earlier that "armed militias and known hate groups" were planning to disrupt the inauguration, following the riotous scenes at the Capitol Building last week. Airbnb will know it is under more intense scrutiny and pressure to root out issues such as mid-pandemic mass gatherings, violence and discrimination that have long been used to smear it, just weeks after going public via a much-publicised IPO.

Back in November on the eve of the election, I analysed what a Biden win might mean for the future of the short-term rental industry, with the help of thought leaders such as Alex Nigg [Properly], Philip Kennard [Futurestay] and Parker Stanberry [Oasis Collection].
