EDITOR'S COMMENT

16•01•21

Towards the end of 2020 the M&A scene was beginning to heat up with Marriott moving to acquire Design Hotels and Ennismore merging with Accor. These two stories highlight the confidence the larger hotel groups have in lifestyle brands, and Palisociety's acquisition of ARRIVE Hotels reinforces the same message.

Founder and CEO of Palisociety, Avi Brosh, said the business is "more inspired and encouraged than ever by the long-term potential of the boutique hospitality sector". The idea that non-branded hotels (or those that are creative and unique in their offering) will lead the recovery is consistently echoed in my personal conversations. More to the point, it is precisely those which are authentic who will shape the next evolution of hotels.

Balancing this debate is the premise that affinities to established brands will ultimately kickstart the rebound. ActivumSG Capital Management has just acquired Odyssey Hotel Group, an operator which deals predominately with franchises under Marriott and IHG. The purchase will provide Odyssey with the backing to expand the footprint of its hotel partners, affirming the belief in brand resilience.

I expect the first few months of 2021 will bring further activity in the M&A space as owners and investors map new ways to thrive in the long-term, and not just survive the short-term.
