• The mass adoption of technology is a trend we've all witnessed over the past year, and it seems that contactless stays are very much here to stay. My chat with Steve Davis cemented this idea. At Operto, Davis is seeing hoteliers increasingly introduce technology and tools that are geared towards creating a guest journey that is as "seamless and as powerful" as possible.

From an operational perspective, tech is being deployed to drive greater efficiency, and Davis expects to see a "repurposing of the front desk" as a result. "I still think we're fairly nascent," he said, "but the smaller, boutique, mid-range hotels... that invest in technology now will pay huge dividends. It will become table stakes over the next couple of years."

• Prime Minister Boris Johnson's roadmap out of lockdown for the UK has caused a stir amongst travel and hospitality leaders. Whilst some are relieved the end is now in sight, news that hotels must endure a further three months before being able to trade is a bitter pill to swallow. Whilst it allows time to prepare for reopening, it also adds to the mounting pressures of borrowings accrued - which is now likely to increase during this time. I expect only the most skilled operators will survive unless the government announces fiscal measures specific to the needs of the hospitality sector. Read more reactions to the news here.
