International Women's Day 2021: Four women defining the future of short-term rentals

STRz marks International Women's Day 2021 by featuring four women in leadership roles who are defining the future of hospitality and the global short-term rental industry.

EDITOR'S COMMENT

08•03•21 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz newsletter!

• To mark this year's International Women's Day, my colleague Hannah Rivera spoke to and featured four female business leaders that are "defining the future of the short-term rental industry" in this must-read spotlight piece.

The four women featured in this article - Merilee Karr [UnderTheDoormat, UK STAA], Rocio Lane [Cleancio], Yaa Priscilla Birago [Femmebnb] and Heather Bayer [Vacation Rental Formula] - are prime examples of leaders that continue to challenge and expand the boundaries of their fields, and will no doubt pave the way for more female leadership roles in the hospitality industry in the future.

Hospitality, like all other industries, still has some way to go to achieve the equality and diversity that is being called for, however this is also a space that prides itself on welcoming and accepting people from all walks of life, no matter their gender, skin colour, religion, sexuality etc. Furthermore, we can be encouraged by the number of women who now hold leadership roles in raising awareness for this sector, promoting responsible growth and advocating fair legislation.

• Cannabis tourism is now a $1 billion market in Canada so it is perhaps not all that surprising to see Toronto-based startup HiBnb raising CAD $500k in pre-seed funding, ahead of its anticipated launch in April, as it seeks to disrupt the marketplace.

The platform, which specialises in helping travellers find cannabis-friendly accommodations in Canada, not only provides advanced search features, allowing guests to filter down their searches based on cannabis, but it also lists "canna-friendly" events designed to expand the startup's reach to its ever-growing community.

Although Canada is only the second country in the world to have officially legalised the use of recreational cannabis, it was reported that ten million packaged units of cannabis were sold in the country in October last year for non-medical purposes. HiBnb's own female founder, Elizabeth Becker, is tapping into a niche market that has much potential to grow, and it follows the trend of specialised platforms emerging to cater to guests' exact needs and preferences.
