• Adaptation is one of many buzzwords used throughout the pandemic to describe business leaders seeking new ways to survive periods of no income. And this week's headline story of KAYAK opening its first ever branded hotel in Miami is a great example of this.

KAYAK, a travel metasearch engine for transport and accommodation, has partnered with hotel brand and management company Life House to open and operate the property next month. A heavily tech-centric hotel, KAYAK will utilise its own app to support the guest experience, with backend software under development to incorporate property management systems, distribution channel management, and consumer and pricing insights.

In this instance, it's the first story I've come across where an OTA is moving into the hotel space. The industry has seen airline company easyJet diversify with its easyHotel brand, with other names in retail also expanding into accommodation. KAYAK's move could spur activity from more online travel agencies - after all, these platforms are incredibly well-leveraged given the vast amount of booking and customer data they compile.

The value of technology seems to be exponentially increasing. It has allowed many businesses to continue trading to various extents, and I wonder whether it will become a pandemic-proof necessity from an investor's perspective. I will touch on this topic in the next Trailblazer webinar on hotel investment and finance in the future different, on Mon 15 March. Register here.
