Podcast: Recruiting and training talent
BHN news editor Eloise Hanson speaks to Hayley Kyle and James Hacon at MAPAL, a hospitality management solution and operating system, about how hotels can overcome the challenges of reopening, ways to recruit and onboard talent, and how to maintain brand and service standards with on and offline training and development.
EDITOR'S COMMENT

• Efforts to source, recruit and train hospitality talent has inevitably ramped up a gear as hotels begin to prepare for reopening. Judging from my own conversations it has become a major focal point for hoteliers - not just in the short term but in the future too, especially in the UK where the implications of Brexit has resulted in a skills shortage. My conversation with the MAPAL team, which provides hospitality training using the platform Flow Learning, is therefore incredibly timely.
In the podcast, we explored why hoteliers should change their mindset towards traditional recruitment strategies. James Hacon, CMO at MAPAL, explained: "In the past we've had a very one-way approach that an interview is about you checking whether a person is the right fit for your business. Frankly, that's out the window this year. Let's reverse it around - how can you sell your business to this person as the place they should come and work, and what can you give them?".

• The appointment of Robert Richardson as CEO of the Institute of Hospitality (IoH) has been largely celebrated by industry peers. Passionate about hospitality and recognised for his leadership achievements, Richardson is a natural fit for the role.
Speaking about his appointment and vision, Richardson made it clear that recruitment and training sits high on his agenda: "We need to attract and inspire future generations of talent," he said, "and I believe the IoH is perfectly placed to help support this. It is a huge honour to step up and lead our institute moving forward into a brave new post-lockdown world.”
It's compelling to talk to those leaders whom embody the drive to continuously improve, and I look forward to supporting the cause.
