• According to recent reports, Sonder is on course to be the latest short-term rental unicorn to go public, this time via a merger with blank-cheque firm Gores Metropoulos II Inc. [also known as a special purpose acquisition company or SPAC].
It is believed the startup, last valued at $1.3bn following a $170m Series E funding round last June, could see its valuation soar to more than $2.5 billion if the merger comes to fruition.
A spotlight has been placed on SPACs since Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky admitted that the home-sharing platform had been approached about such a merger with billionaire investor Bill Ackman, before eventually going public via an IPO in December.
Despite laying off 22 per cent of its workforce and furloughing a further 11 per cent of its staff last year, Sonder has since shifted its model to longer-term, flexible stays and expanded into new locations, such as Mexico, Spain and Scotland.
• It is also welcome news that holiday lets and self-catered accommodation can reopen again from today in England. With an increase in new proptech solutions and an industry focus on elevated property standards, it shows that homes with convenience, privacy and space can give travellers the confidence they need to once again book a stay at a short-term rental.
