• I'd like to start off this week's editorial comment by thanking everyone who contributed to making the 2021 Shortyz Awards such a success in a challenging year like this, from the thousands of you who tuned in last Thursday, to the 11,000 people who voted, and the IHM team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

• As I mentioned on my last video newsletter, SPAC is a word you have probably heard a lot of in 2021, and the signs are more companies will seek a quick route to go public this year.
In the last few weeks alone, Inspirato and Sonder have been linked with mergers with blank-cheque / special purpose acquisition companies [SPACs], and now smart home operating system SmartRent is following in their tracks by merging with Fifth Wall Acquisition Corp. I.
Backed by a host of high-profile investors, including Barry Sternlicht, SmartRent is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy to enable property owners and developers to decrease the complexities and costs of property management. SPAC mergers are an increasingly popular, quick-fire route to the stock market, particularly in light of Airbnb's lengthy IPO process, and the proptech firm's expansion and reach is likely to accelerate through the rest of the year.
