EDITOR'S COMMENT

17•05•21 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz newsletter.

• Airbnb's second earnings report since going public in December highlights both the challenges to attract new hosts moving forward and opportunities facing the home-sharing platform as we begin to emerge from Covid-enforced lockdowns.

The company has reported a five per cent rise in revenue, even exceeding Wall Street expectations, and seen its gross booking value increase by 52 per cent, propped up by more expensive bookings for family travel and entire home reservations, which coincides with the rollout of vaccines and easing of travel restrictions in the USA in particular. AirDNA data suggests the US rental industry has already recovered above 2019 levels.

However, the recovery has been more modest in Europe where the enforcement of restrictions has been varied to say the least, although slight improvements have been cautiously observed in the UK and France. In addition, Airbnb has posted a Q1 net loss totalling $1.2 billion, although it attributes this to a number of "one-off costs".

Though CEO Brian Chesky is anticipating a surge in holiday bookings in Q2 and the company's global advertising campaign is being expanded, Airbnb's bid to recruit new hosts and deliver a "world class" service will be tested by rivals such as Vrbo and Booking.com, which are increasingly confident in replicating Airbnb's host community and success.

• Our no-cost RockSTRz webinar series continues tomorrow [18 May, 4pm BST] as we launch into an unmissable session entitled "Tech this out: Tapping into the traveller psyche".

We'll be discussing everything ranging from how companies are keeping themselves ‘top of mind’ by prioritising traveller needs, the latest trends in contactless technology and increased automation, which innovations in technology are built to last and how it will shift, and how tech convergence will continue to shape the industry

Our expert panellists joining me for the webinar will be:

  • Nils Erik Mattisson, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Minut
  • Christoph Lückl, Head of B2B, Nuki Home Solutions GmbH
  • Luca Zambello, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jurny Inc.
