• There’s been a slowdown of major deals and transactions since the crisis struck. Whilst at property level cost-cutting measures were enforced, the prolonged lack of trade has made it difficult to value businesses prompting caution amongst M&A players. As the dust begins to settle and some clarity gained, it’s evident conversations are restarting given Aimbridge’s acquisition of Grupo Hotelero Prisma - gaining management of Prisma's 42 properties as well as its team.

Aimbridge has a strong presence in 20 countries worldwide, including over 70 independent, boutique and lifestyle hotels. Expansion into Mexico could lead to further opportunities in Central America for the group, especially if merging with operators that already have a reputation in the region.

In the States, the boutique hotel sector has been one of the fastest growing segments in the past few years, and fared better than traditional hotels against the impact of Covid-19. As an asset class, they’re in a good position to recover faster as a result of their nimble operational approach and ability to recapture rates from demand.

A pain point for the industry, and perhaps felt more acutely in the UK, is the vast quantity of supply versus the scarcity of employees. Thousands of jobs are currently available with little interest exhibited. I’ll be exploring the challenges and opportunities of recruitment in the next Trailblazer webinar, Monday 21st June, where I’ll be sharing some advice and guidance.
