• The announcement that the lifting of Covid restrictions in the UK will be delayed until at least 19 July comes as yet another bitter blow to the travel and hospitality sectors, however the surge in demand for domestic travel is piquing the interests of investors.
Away Resorts is the latest holiday park operator to benefit, as private equity firm CVC Capital Partners has confirmed that it will be investing £250 million in the company for a majority stake in the business. The transaction is expected to close later this year.
The fact that heavyweight competitors such as Awaze and Roompot are engaging in significant M&A activity at the moment suggests that the staycation trend will not be disappearing any time soon, with the former recently buying three firms in the UK and Denmark and then selling Landal GreenParks to the latter.
Unlike last year, however, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as the vaccination rollout continues to accelerate and hopes rise for a cautious return to international travel. The level of investment in self-catered accommodation businesses indicates that the traveller mindset is shifting towards taking more trips and longer trips, and the easing of border restrictions will drive the 'work / live from anywhere' approach even more.
